What's the farthest you've ever been on your own steam?

Posted on Sep 26th, 2008 by Goddess2day : Poet, Philosopher, Writer, Wannabe. Goddess2day
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for September 26, 2008:

Dear World,

The farthest I have ever been on my own steam is probably three days.    Mmm...three whole delicious, empowering days.           Okay...make that two...becuz psst...I cheated on the last day.

However, since no one was any the wiser, lets call it three days in case the-Guinness longest-record-keeper-guys ever decide to ...er...um...ahem...record me. Hilarious.

My three-day-food-strike was not done to bring neighboring countries to their knees nor was it engineered to soften God for great crops and neither was it attempted for weight loss......rather it was for a trifle more outrageous reason....my starvation spree was my brilliant strategy to keep my parents off my ‘book' case for good!

You see, they made the mistake of threatening to burn all my storybooks!  Books that belong to the school library!

The nerves!!

You know, they would have gone insane if they had to raise kids in the x-box and you-tube age!   (No wonder Life gave them small challenges, and one in the form of a daughter who was addicted to storybooks and nature....and oh yes, daydreaming...;-)

I mean...where on my forehead was it written...okay...never mind my forehead...where in the commandment is it written that ‘thou shall not read too much?"

The blantant nerves!

First they brought me into this story-infested world,(against my will) fill my head up with Wynkyn and Blinkyn stories and then try to take the Nod part away from me...like what the heck???

And if you had parents like mine, you would see it the same way, trust me.   And the way I saw it was that it was a drastic situation and there was no other way to reason with them except through drastic gandhi-like-starvation measures........

.........Oh, they were not ‘bad' parents but to a 10 year old, trust me, they were book-terminators in human habit.

Anyway,  since I hated cooked food in those days, the food-deprivation spree was easy-peasy....and psst, while I gave my parents the silent treatment, I hid under my bed and read all the same old, same old storybooks I had *borrowed* (another word for "keeps"...either that or leave the books at the mercy of the field mice;-) from my school library donated by the Ranfurly Library, a British service that donated new and used books to developing worlds...(I still find it hard to believe that my parents gave me everything except books ;-)

Sigh.  Lack of material to read was not my only problem.  I got blamed for every unsolved mystery.

There was this time when my house almost burned to the ground and yours truly got blamed all because when the cry of "fire, fire" hit the silence, instead of running towards the fire like my moths-to-doomsday siblings, I ran to the kitchen, filled a large bowl with water and ran up the stairs to rescue my books....

And mommy/daddy of course remembered this incident.  Instead of applauding their daughter for her insight and bravery and trying to save her precious books, they put two and two together and came up with "carelessness."

Yes. "Carelessness."   Go ahead and gasp if you need to...but they claimed that I left a lamp burning haphazardly....oh who knows...with the kind of imagination that posessed them, I bet they saw me reading under the bed with a night lamp....

The awful nerves!!!

Ya know!!  There was this time when my mom gave away a whole third of my wardrobe to the needy folks without asking me!!  So why was I upset about skirts and dresses if all I cared about was books?  Hello!!!  My books were hidden in that very same box of unwanted clothes!!

God!  I gave my mother the silent treatment for two whole days with plenty of poisonous glares in between, letting her know loud and clear that I put her right up there with field mice who somehow believed they were nature's paper-shredders...

...Ya think  mother learned a lesson from my silent treatment?  Nope...she never did.   Ya think I learned from my experience?  Er...yes....but my kids will demand to differ.  You see, when they were younger, I kept on giving away their toys to the salvation people without asking their permission.

Oh for Elmo's sake...what's the point of asking them anyway, they would only say ‘no'....I mean which kid really know the true meaning of  ‘clutter...' or the ‘joy of giving."???

My kids are a lot older now but they still look at every ‘garbage bag' awaiting pick up with high suspicions....and lol...there are times ‘dejavu' happened for each time I tried to ship Elmo off for adoption, I got the feeling I had done this before.......(lol, either Elmo jumped out of the sack or someone sneaked him back in the house when I wasn't looking ;-)

One item my kids get to keep for always....yes you guessed right....I cannot bear to part with any of their storybooks ;-)

Yours truly has truly run out of steam....
Amy :-)

Thanks for sharing that with me, sweet Samme,  and….oh my goodness……so we do have something in common, family who did not understand our need to 'read'.   Lol…my parents didn't mind my 'writing'……you see, it was great to have a built-in secretary. lol.   Life is too good to be true….

Lol, Leez.  Yuppers, tis calls for plenty of xtra madness rum and some golden liquid Eldorado ones too……psst…I got rid of Elmo a long time back…but don't ever tell the kids….or world war three will erupt………..and you know what else?  Seriously.  I wished I had kept Elmo…oh god….life sucks at times ;-)

Okay….breathee…..breathee……thanks!  It works!

Laughing out loud here, Nic.   Thanks for loving my stories………gosh I was a genius little brat….but omg…you just made me realize something………..if my kids ever pull that 'starvation stunt' on me, I think I would die a horrible death…..

Sigh. Isn't it kool that Karma doesn't work the way the old heads said it would…..becuz……..actually scratch that……..I did have a taste of my own medicine………a tiny taste…….so the universe is kind to little brats after all…..because a few years back, I had a verbal spar with my son in the car on the way to school….(well…for his organizing abilities.  You see, when I am ready to leave the house, that's the time he took to run east, west, north and south to find his things;-)  That was the day I got some dirty looks and before he stepped out of the car, he took all his money out of his wallet and threw it into the car.

Needless to say, I had a horrible day.   However, guess who was the first one to apologize and make up at the end of the day?  Ha ha…..yes…..little mr. wise guy himself. lol

I love it, Amy! What a great story. It's Amylicious!

I have had an ever growing library that started quite early. Inspired by a grandmother who had a huge collection of storybooks she had been collecting since way back, I was in one way or another predisposed to ask for a set of encyclopedias for my 5th birthday. Which i received and read cover to cover.

Toys didn't interest me much. I would immediately take them apart to see how they worked and thereafter lose interest in them. When my mother threatened to throw them all away if I didn't clean them up, it wasn't much of a threat. I grabbed my watercolors and went out to paint in the grass. I never saw my toys again and didn't miss them much. I was just as happy playing with sticks and rocks as anything else, and those were in abundance.

  …and Amy loves one darylicous delightful Darin………..so cute…….what a unique little force he was back in the day…taking the world apart toy by toy….learning about it from story books to encyclopaedia……

My son is similar too…there wasn't a toy he didn't take apart….and rewired and duct taped….lol….he still keeps some of his 'experiments' on full display….

Hey, but lucky you…wished I had your grandma…I would have lived permanently at her house…

i just about did live with her permanently…she had all the doctor seuss books and raggedy ann and andy. She had  all the classics, and the new ones. Gramma also had a daughter 6 months older than me so my aunt and i were more like brother and sister. We'd crawl up on her lap and she'd read to us, so many amazing stories. She has a beautiful voice. It still delights me to hear her when she calls. When she says my name i feel so loved, i smile from ear to ear.

Oh wow!  A whole treasury of books……your gramma is the best in the world…..

(One of mine died when my dad was a baby and the other one couldn't read ;-)  Her parents didn't believe girls need to know how to read and write….but they did taught her some mathematics..)

Sure glad to hear your gramma is still alive…she sure sounds like a great gal.     And funny that….a couple of my aunts are around my age too……

Say, Darin, next lifetime, will you trade your Gramma for one of mine?

“No, way!” Darin says.

Oh Wow Amy, I can really feel for you, your storybooks were part of your world and the threat of burning them quite a brutal invasion of that world I imagine. But I also see, you defending your treasures so brave, has made you a big girl now hasn't it ? !
About giving your kids stuff to the salvation people..ah well. most of us girls ..try their whole life not to look like their moms(bless their souls) but in the end fate has decided different..(LOL)!

I was very saddened early in my childhood because my Dad died when I was 12, but I also realized how LUCKY I was: he worked at a publishing company and we always got lots of books as presents. My family has been kind of a book fanclub.

So dear Amy, I've got a new friend now and that's You. You wanna come play…I still got a few  real nice childhood story books and some off them even pop up!

 O, Star…thanks for filling my blog with your sweet sparkle…………..you say such enchanting things just like the heavenly star you truly are…………..and hey, lol, in those days, my mom received my ‘glares' like water falling on duck's back……..but her biggest fear was that her daughter would grow into a book-a-holic and might even forget to feed her future children…………………..however, immediately after my children arrived, my craze for books disappeared……………………and now, here I am, waiting for it to reappear….mmm…it would be so good to get lost in a tale out of this world……oh wait, one arrived today……..a book by C.G. Walters here at Gaia………I can hardly wait to read “Sacred Vow” in the next few days……psst guys…don't tell Mom.

Lol, it must be a guy thing to take apart and rewire toys…..into gigantic rocket ships and ocean liners and skyscrapers…..so its really awesome to hear you treasured books too….mmm…here is wishing you many lovely Eldorado Sunsets :-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey Alluvja…I so enjoyed reading your lovely words….and lol, so true….I am still trying hard not to ‘look' like my mother but deep within I know I would act exactly like her if I had her mind and her shoes.  rotfl…it would be a real hoot if I ever find out my mother is trying hard not to ‘look' like her daughter.
Oh, that's devestating your father died when you were so young….but sure glad to hear you had books galore to keep you company, my wonderful, new friend….(so glad we are friends…)…….and yes, oh yes….I'd be delighted to come play and soak up all those childhood tales…mmm….magical and enchanting……
So here is to magical days on Gaia…where both of us learn to use our magic wands to make dreams come true.  :-))
